Makeup Storage
With so many makeup tutorials out there on Youtube and Instagram, I thought I'd start my blog with a topic that there doesn't seem too much information on and something that I'm really struggling with at the moment.
It might be hard to believe, but I'm a total makeup and skincare junky (yep, total shock) and this is proving to be even more of a challenge as we are mid-renovation and at present, the ensuite my husband and I share is un-renovated and smaller than our walk-in-robe. Add to that it's aesthetic appeal is nouveau post-apocalyptic meets 80's DIY and it's far from a space where I want to display my beautiful cosmetics, moreover I lack the room to store them.
As such, I'm currently researching different storage ideas for the interim as our last bathroom perfectly catered for my obsession, including a space for my airbrush compressor and my paraffin wax foot spa.
Along with the aesthetics of makeup storage, there are practicalities that must be considered when choosing the right methods of storage for your products. The factors that you should consider are:
SPACE
VENTILATION
TEMPERATURE
AESTHETIC
Gene Roddenberry said it first but as far as storage is concerned, for most of us SPACE really is the final frontier. If you're fortunate enough to have a well-ventilated and temperate bathroom, storage in your bathroom is the natural place and even if space is at a premium, a shoe organiser hung on the back of your bathroom door works a treat. It's soft enough that it shouldn't mark your wall when the door is opened and the transparent pouches make it easy to see what's in each compartment. You can pick these up from Target, Kmart, BIGW or online for as little as $6 and all the mess is hidden behind the door.

My pick, though, is this over the door beauty armoire that I found on Amazon and am considering ordering for myself. Rather than behind-the-door, this is hung on the front of the door and in white, is attractive enough to suit most decors (imho). Other things I like are that you can access it either when you're in the bathroom with the door open, or, if your bathroom is an ensuite, you can still use it from the bedroom side of the door.
My only concern is that if you have a lot of product in it, the weight may throw the door off-kilter, so I'll have a chat with hubby about that before I order it. If it's as good as it looks, it may solve my temporary storage woes! Click on the picture for the link to purchase it online.
PRODUCT SEPARATION doesn't just make sense for organisation, but also to avoid cross-contamination. If you've ever had a bottle of foundation leak all through your eyeshadow palettes, you'll understand what I'm talking about. The catastrophic clean-up required is rivalled only by the zombie apocalypse.
Having easy-to-clean bags or containers is essential and if any of the seals on the packaging of any of your makeup starts to wear eg. eyeshadow cases/palettes clasps begin to get flimsy, seperate them ASAP. If they open and shatter, well ... there you go again, zombie apocalypse.
Glosses; primers; liquid highlighters; liquid blush or anything in tubes should be in a separate compartment and definitely store your brushes where they have good air-circulation and away from any products that can leak.
Pinterest have some fantastic separation storage ideas and I've listed some below for you. They're all budget-friendly, and can be incorporated in drawers and cupboards.
Makeup brushes need good VENTILATION when they're drying and especially if they're dirty. If you have the time to meticulously clean your brushes every time you do your makeup, I am in awe of you. Your brushes will last forever and a display of beautifully clean brushes is a sight to behold. Clean brushes can be stored safely and maintain their shape in a brush roll, but in those in-between times, storage with the bristles facing down for drying or with them up when dry is always best.
The bottom two suggestions are available at IKEA.
Another (self-imposed) challenge I have in our ensuite is TEMPERATURE control. As I keep our ensuite door closed to avoid creation depression (hey, at least I have an ensuite though, right?), on a Queensland summer day it can get incredibly hot in there, even with the window open. As such, I store a lot of my makeup in my bedroom armoire during the warmer months (which are pretty much every month) to ensure it doesn't do this ...
I truly hope that I've been able to help you with some warnings and suggestions for your makeup storage, but as girls who love makeup, AESTHETICS are paramount, so I've added some #goals and makeup dreams for you below.
Remember, you are beautiful already. Makeup is just the frame to the masterpiece.
Blessings & love,
